Rupi Soren, Mother of Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Dies

Ranchi: Rupi Soren, mother of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and wife of former Chief Minister Shibu Soren, died at a private hospital in Ranchi on Wednesday. She had been undergoing treatment for multiple health complications and was on ventilator support before her death.

Rupi Soren was admitted to Hill View Hospital and Research Centre on September 18 following breathing difficulties. Her condition subsequently deteriorated, hospital authorities said.

Her death comes around 14 months after the death of Shibu Soren, who passed away in August 2025 at the age of 81 following a prolonged illness. Shibu Soren was a founding leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and served as Jharkhand Chief Minister on three occasions.

Rupi Soren had largely remained away from active politics, although she contested the 1999 Lok Sabha election from Dumka on a JMM ticket. She secured 1,96,493 votes against BJP candidate Babulal Marandi’s 2,01,141 votes.

In June 2026, Rupi Soren received the Padma Bhushan awarded posthumously to Shibu Soren at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Further details regarding her last rites are expected to be announced by the family.
