OpenAI to Merge ChatGPT’s Chat and Work Tabs in Major Desktop App Overhaul

New Delhi: Artificial intelligence firm Sam Altman-led OpenAI is set to simplify the ChatGPT desktop experience by merging its separate “Chat” and “Work” tabs into a unified interface, a move aimed at making the platform more intuitive and efficient for users.

According to reports and communications sent by OpenAI to users, the company plans to combine the two sections so users can seamlessly move from brainstorming ideas to executing complex tasks without switching between multiple tabs. The feature will initially be rolled out to a limited group of users for testing and feedback before a wider release.

Currently, the ChatGPT desktop application includes separate areas for ChatGPT and Codex, with ChatGPT further divided into Chat and Work tabs. While the Chat tab is primarily used for everyday conversations and queries, the Work tab is designed for more advanced, multi-step tasks. OpenAI believes the existing structure can make project management and navigation cumbersome for users.

The unified interface is expected to allow users to develop an idea through conversation and then directly instruct ChatGPT to perform tasks such as creating presentations, building websites, handling files, or carrying out web-based actions, all from a single workspace. OpenAI said the change is intended to make interactions more fluid and productive.

Despite the integration of Chat and Work functions, Codex, OpenAI’s coding-focused environment, will continue to operate as a separate experience within the desktop application. However, both ChatGPT and Codex will draw from a common token allowance pool, meaning usage limits will be shared across services. OpenAI has stated that while most users are unlikely to experience disruptions, heavy usage could result in more frequent waiting periods for usage resets.

Industry observers note that the decision mirrors a similar move by rival AI company Anthropic, which earlier merged Claude’s Chat and Cowork functions into a single interface. The development underscores a growing trend among AI firms to streamline user experiences and transform chatbots into end-to-end productivity platforms.

The rollout is expected to begin with select users before being made available more broadly, marking another step in OpenAI’s efforts to position ChatGPT as a comprehensive workspace for both casual users and professionals.
