Garhwa: In a significant citizen-led initiative aimed at protecting the rapidly deteriorating Danro River, noted social activist Deepak Sharma launched a mass signature campaign in the town, calling upon residents to unite for the conservation and revival of one of the district’s most important natural water resources.
The campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from citizens, students, social workers, environmental supporters, and local residents who pledged their support for restoring the river’s ecological health. Participants signed a memorandum urging authorities to take immediate and effective measures to address pollution, encroachment, indiscriminate dumping of waste, and declining water flow in the river.
Addressing the gathering, Deepak Sharma said the Danro River is not merely a water body but an integral part of Garhwa’s identity, culture, and environmental heritage. He expressed concern that years of neglect, unchecked pollution, and shrinking water levels have pushed the river towards an ecological crisis. He emphasized that protecting the river is essential not only for the present generation but also for future generations who depend on it for water security and environmental sustainability.
“The Danro River has nurtured generations of people in Garhwa. Its conservation is a collective responsibility. Through this signature campaign, we want to create awareness and build a people’s movement for the river’s revival,” Sharma said.
Citizens participating in the drive highlighted the urgent need for river cleaning, prevention of waste disposal, protection of riverbanks from encroachment, and implementation of long-term conservation measures. Many residents expressed concern that continued degradation of the river could adversely affect groundwater levels, biodiversity, and the overall environment of the district.
The campaign also served as a platform to educate people about the importance of water conservation and community participation in environmental protection. Volunteers distributed awareness materials and encouraged citizens to actively support efforts aimed at restoring the river’s natural flow and cleanliness.
Organizers announced that the signatures collected during the campaign would be submitted to the district administration and concerned government departments, seeking concrete action for the protection and rejuvenation of the Danro River.
Environmentalists and local leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as a positive step towards building public consciousness on river conservation. They stressed that lasting environmental change can only be achieved when citizens and authorities work together to safeguard natural resources.
With growing public support, the campaign is expected to gain momentum in the coming days, further strengthening the call for urgent action to preserve the Danro River, a lifeline for thousands of people across the region.
