Palamau/Wardha: Bringing pride to Jharkhand’s cultural and academic community, Manish Tiwary, a young theatre practitioner and research scholar from Lahlhe village in Palamu district, has been awarded a Ph.D. in Dramatic Arts by the Department of Performing Arts, Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya, Wardha, Maharashtra.
Tiwary completed his doctoral research on “A Study and Analysis of Theatre and Quasi-Theatrical Folk Performance Traditions Prevalent in Jharkhand,” a scholarly work that documents and critically examines the state’s rich folk theatre heritage. His research explores various traditional and quasi-theatrical performance forms practiced across Jharkhand, highlighting their cultural relevance, artistic characteristics and contribution to the region’s social identity.
The son of Shobha Tiwary and Damodar Tiwary, Manish successfully defended his thesis during his viva voce examination held on August 14, 2026. The research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Vidhu Khare Das and was accepted in accordance with the University Grants Commission’s Ph.D. regulations.
A dedicated theatre artist, Tiwary has been actively associated with acting, direction, theatre training and folk performance traditions for several years. His academic pursuit, combined with extensive field experience, has enabled him to bridge the gap between traditional performance practices and contemporary scholarly research.
His achievement is being viewed as a significant contribution to the preservation and recognition of Jharkhand’s indigenous cultural traditions. By bringing folk performance forms into academic discourse, the research helps document artistic practices that have long been sustained through oral and community traditions.
Expressing gratitude to his parents, teachers, research supervisor and fellow theatre practitioners, Tiwary described the research as a journey to reconnect with the cultural roots of Jharkhand. His accomplishment serves as an inspiration for aspiring scholars and artists from rural India, demonstrating that dedication to both academics and culture can create a lasting impact.
