Police Role in MACT, NDPS Cases Under Judicial Lens in Latehar

Latehar: A one-day district-level workshop was organised at the Civil Court campus in Latehar under the directions of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority and the guidance of Principal District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Sheshnath Singh.

The workshop focused on the legal provisions and procedural aspects related to Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) cases and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Superintendent of Police, Latehar, and DLSA member Kumar Gaurav was also present at the workshop.

Addressing the workshop, Principal District and Sessions Judge Sheshnath Singh said that the role of the police in MACT and NDPS cases is extremely sensitive and important. He stressed that prompt and accurate investigation in road accident cases is essential to ensure timely justice for victims and their families.

At the same time, he said that strict and error-free compliance with legal procedures is necessary to effectively curb the illegal drug trade, which is adversely affecting society. He directed the police officers to discharge their duties with utmost sensitivity, accountability and adherence to legal provisions.

Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav highlighted the consequences of road accidents and narcotics-related offences, their impact on society, and the duties and responsibilities of the police. District and Additional Sessions Judge Dinesh Kumar Mishra explained various provisions and aspects related to motor accident claim cases.

During the workshop, District and Additional Sessions Judges Sunil Dutta Dwivedi and Deepak Kumar, District and Additional Sessions Judge-III, provided police officers with detailed technical and practical guidance on preparing case diaries, properly collecting and preserving evidence, following prescribed procedures for seizure in NDPS cases, and submitting reports before the court within the stipulated time.

The officials also explained important provisions of the NDPS Act and the procedural requirements associated with such cases.

Sub-Divisional Officer Dinesh Kumar provided technical and important information relating to motor accident claims. District Road Safety Manager Tanvir Hussain and Head Assistant Saroj Telra briefed participants on road safety and various related aspects.

The workshop also included a detailed discussion on the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) and their relevance to investigation and judicial proceedings.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Vikram Anand, DLSA Secretary Shivam Chaurasia, District Prosecutor Shivshankar Ram, all Sub-Divisional Police Officers, the Headquarters Deputy Superintendent of Police, officers-in-charge of all police stations and other police officials of the district were present at the workshop.
