Latehar: The Latehar district administration has stepped up efforts towards the rehabilitation of villagers living inside the core area of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR), with Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kumar holding a meeting with village heads and public representatives to discuss the proposed rehabilitation site at Lai-Pailapathar.
The meeting, held at the Collectorate auditorium under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, focused on the proposed relocation of residents of Kujrum and Latu villages, which fall within the core area of the Palamu Tiger Reserve. Representatives of adjoining villages were invited to deliberate on the proposed rehabilitation arrangements and the infrastructure required at the new settlement.
The administration has proposed Lai and Pailapathar villages under Chorha Panchayat of Saryu block as the rehabilitation site. Discussions during the meeting centred on the development of essential infrastructure and civic amenities required to provide rehabilitated families with a secure and dignified living environment.
Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kumar directed officials to ensure that the rehabilitation process takes into account the needs, concerns and welfare of the affected villagers. He emphasised that basic facilities such as roads, drinking water, electricity, education and healthcare must be adequately addressed at the proposed rehabilitation site.
The relocation of human settlements from protected forest areas is a sensitive issue, involving both wildlife conservation and the livelihood concerns of forest-dependent communities. The Palamu Tiger Reserve, one of Jharkhand’s most important tiger habitats, contains villages and human settlements within and around its protected landscape. Any rehabilitation exercise, therefore, requires coordination between the forest administration, district authorities and local communities.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to village heads and elected representatives to cooperate with the administration in taking the rehabilitation process forward. He said that rehabilitation was a sensitive matter and that a sustainable solution could be achieved only through dialogue, mutual coordination and cooperation among all stakeholders.
Kumar further asked villagers and their representatives to place any objections, grievances or difficulties before the administration so that they could be examined and addressed in accordance with applicable rules and government procedures. He also appealed to all stakeholders to maintain peace and harmony during the process.
Local representatives were given an opportunity to put forward their suggestions regarding the proposed rehabilitation site and its surrounding areas. The administration assured that these suggestions would be examined while planning the facilities and other requirements at the site.
The Deputy Commissioner subsequently directed the concerned officials to coordinate with relevant departments and take necessary action based on the requirements and suggestions placed before the meeting.
The Gram Pradhan of Pailapathar village was, however, absent from the meeting.
The meeting was attended by Palamu Tiger Reserve Deputy Director Kumar Ashish, Additional Collector Salman Zafar Khizri, Mahuadand Sub-Divisional Officer Suleman Mundari, District Public Relations Officer Dr Chandan, SDPO Mahuadand, Block Development Officers of Garu and Saryu, Circle Officer of Garu, MP representative Vivekanand Gupta, Manika MLA representative Sunil Prasad, concerned block chiefs and village heads, among others.
The latest administrative discussions indicate an attempt to move the proposed rehabilitation process forward through consultations with local representatives, while balancing the requirements of wildlife conservation, community welfare and development of basic infrastructure at the proposed resettlement site.
