Gurugram: India’s largest airline IndiGo on Tuesday announced the appointment of aviation veteran William (Willie) Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory and security clearances. Walsh is expected to assume office no later than August 3, 2026, after completing his tenure as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on July 31.
The appointment follows the sudden exit of Pieter Elbers, who stepped down earlier this month after the airline faced regulatory scrutiny over widespread flight cancellations during December 2025. In the interim, IndiGo’s promoter and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia had taken on executive responsibilities.
Walsh brings more than four decades of global aviation experience to IndiGo. He is currently the head of IATA, the apex global airline industry body, a role he has held since 2021. Prior to this, Walsh served as Chief Executive Officer of International Airlines Group (IAG) from 2011 to 2020, overseeing airlines such as British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus. He was earlier the CEO of British Airways and began his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus.
Announcing the appointment, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said Walsh’s extensive leadership experience and global perspective make him well suited to guide the airline through its next phase of growth in a competitive international environment. Rahul Bhatia said Walsh’s values-driven leadership and operational expertise would be critical as IndiGo strengthens its operational performance and expands its international footprint.
Commenting on his appointment, Walsh said he was delighted to join IndiGo, describing the airline as having a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation built by its people.
IndiGo currently commands nearly two-thirds of India’s domestic aviation market and continues to expand aggressively across international routes. Walsh’s appointment is seen as a key step toward stabilising operations and supporting long-term growth.
