SPIC MACAY Brings Manipuri Classical Dance to Achyut Patwardhan School

Varanasi: Achyut Patwardhan School witnessed a vibrant celebration of India’s classical heritage today as it hosted a culturally enriching programme in collaboration with SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth). The initiative reflected SPIC MACAY’s enduring mission to introduce India’s intangible cultural traditions to younger generations through live, immersive experiences.

The programme commenced on a ceremonial note with the lighting of the traditional lamp by the visiting artists, symbolising the illumination of knowledge and artistic wisdom. Teachers, students, participants from Vasanta College, and members of a women empowerment team gathered for the event, which began with the presentation of bouquets to formally welcome the guests.

Gracefully anchored by Divya Prakash Shukla, the programme maintained an engaging and informative tone. A brief introduction to Manipuri dance was presented by students Raunak and Anshika, who highlighted the form’s devotional origins and its hallmark style characterised by lyrical movements, subtle expressions, and spiritual symbolism.

The highlight of the programme was an evocative Manipuri dance recital by Dr. Sinam Basu Singh, one of the leading exponents of the form. A ‘Top’ graded artist of Prasar Bharati and National Doordarshan, Dr. Singh is the first male Manipuri dancer to have received the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. A native of Manipur, he comes from a distinguished artistic lineage as the grandson of legendary Meitei Pung maestro Guru (Late) Sinam Bokul Singh.

Trained under noted gurus and academically accomplished, Dr. Singh is an empanelled artist with the ICCR and the Ministry of Culture. With performances across India and internationally—including Australia, Japan, Russia, the United States, and Southeast Asia—he has conducted over 700 lecture-demonstrations and workshops, contributing significantly to the global recognition of Manipuri dance.

Accompanied by a talented ensemble of vocalists, instrumentalists, and dancers, the performance mesmerised the audience with its rhythmic intricacy, refined movements, and devotional depth.

In a thoughtful closing gesture, the artists were honoured with traditional ang vastra and eco-friendly gifts crafted by students from recycled materials. Delivering the vote of thanks, Principal Arjun Bhadauriya acknowledged SPIC MACAY, the artists, and all collaborators, with special appreciation for Medhna of Rajghat Besant School for facilitating the programme. The event stood as a meaningful blend of education, culture, and sustainability.
