PPFA Advocates for Total Implementation of UCC

GUWAHATI: Expressing gratifications over a recent observation of Delhi High Court in favour of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), northeast India based nationalist citizen’s forum ‘Patriotic People’s Front Assam’ (PPFA) urged the Centre to implement the UCC across the country without further delays.

Mentionable is that the high court favouring a UCC in the country asked the Union government in New Delhi to take necessary steps for its total implementation. It observed that in the modern society of India, which is gradually becoming homogenous, the traditional barriers of religion, community and caste are slowly dissipating.

The court also viewed that the Indian youth belonging to various communities, tribes, castes or religions, who solemnise their marriages, ought not to be forced to struggle with issues arising due to conflicts in various personal laws, especially in relation to their marriages and divorces.

“We whole heartedly support the high court’s reflection that there should be a Code which is common to all in our country,” stated a PPFA statement adding that once implemented fully, the UCC will essentially provide one law for the entire country, applicable to all religious communities in their personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption etc.
